What's up with Caroline Giuliani? Is she a thief now?
Caroline Giuliani, daughter of former mayor Rudolph Giuliani, was arrested today for shoplifting from an Upper East Side beauty store.
The 20-year-old was allegedly caught stealing about $100 worth of makeup from a Sephora store on 86th Street and Lexington Avenue around 2 pm.
Caroline and her brother, Andrew, are the children from Giuliani's marriage to former television host Donna Hanover. That union ended in a bitter divorce that played out in the New York tabloids.
According to the New York Post, when store managers discovered who the suspect was, "several high-ranking officers were dispatched to the store, an unusual measure for a shoplifting charge."
Caroline Giuliani, 20, a student at Harvard University, was caught about 3:30 p.m. shoplifting more than $150 worth of cosmetics at a Sephora on E. 86th St. and Lexington Ave., sources said.
"She was stopped by store security and a salesperson who observed this. They called police," a law enforcement source said.
The daughter of New York's toughest-talking, law-and-order mayor was arrested for petty larceny and hauled out of the store in handcuffs. She was taken to the 19th Precinct stationhouse, where she was expected to be issued a desk appearance ticket.
Once store employees learned who the suspect's father is, they told cops they didn't want to press charges, a source said.
Manhattan District Attorney Office declined to comment on whether it will prosecute Giuliani.
Police were reviewing surveillance video to see if the crime was captured on tape.
A store security guard found five cosmetic items stuffed in the pockets of Giuliani's jacket, a source said.
Witnesses said Giuliani, who was carrying a black and white Aldo shoes bag, was taken into a back room of the store after she was nabbed.
"She was a pretty girl with blond hair. She got carted off in cuffs by four cops, two were holding her really tight," said Dominic Zawada, 25, a tourist from Detroit, who was in the store with his girlfriend when the incident occurred.
Giuliani, whose mother is Rudy Giuliani's second wife Donna Hanover, graduated with honors in 2007 from tony Trinity High School on the upper West Side.
She is a theatrical student at Harvard.
Neither Giuliani or Hanover could be immediately reached for comment.
In August 2007, she made headlines by support Barack Obama for president, going against her conservative father, who was then a contending for the Republican nomination.
